Storytelling

For as long as man could speak we have found ways to communicate to one another.  The most effective way of doing this was through means of stories. Basic stories, such as cave paintings told the tails of a hunt and in the future vikings would do this through word of mouth and tell stories of their adventures and pillages through means of poem. in the modern day we tell stories through books, videos, nursery rhymes and video games. A lot of inspiration can come from books and fables and the game developers interpretations on how enemy/characters will look in the game world and if it would be enjoyable to play or a slightly dull narrative, these include games from the Harry Potter series or the lord of the ring series as the games move away from the films and show additional aspects (e.g. spells, mechanics, enemies, locations etc.) that the films didn't have the time or resources to include.  These stories cam make us laugh, make us cry, make us feel empowered with god like abilities or make us cower in fear, but overall make us feel like the most important piece of an truly gigantic jigsaw and the way the story engulfs and communicates with the player (be it ancient myths and legends as seen in games like dragons dogma and devil may cry) it can leave a lasting impact and state of awe in the player that makes them want to read up on background and the mythos in online forums, wikis, idealistic theories and of course carrying on the story by buying the sequel/prequel.

Linear and stereotypes

Back on older consoles like the NES or the SEGA Genesis for example, 2D side scroller games were fast, fun and enjoyable. The stories themselves were mostly put in the game guides and had the the player read background of the game world possibally to reduce clutter and get straight into the action however at the time their stories were some what lacking but because of the great game play it was not the biggest issue of the time. The extent of a story back then  was "you are a hero save the princess/world" this can be seen in many games such as: Ninga gaden, Sonic, Castlevania, Mega man etc. But, Even though basic, the story got the main thing right it got right, was giving the player a sense of purpose because you are the only person who can take on this quest or battle and advance the story and the player takes on the role and persona of that character.

RPGs
RPG games offer their own story but are very open on how you wish to approach it e.g. giving you multiple paths. Do you wanna do things quietly ? Do you want to make many allies along the way, will you use your power for the good of mankind or create chaos ? These are all things the player usually has control of including creation and customization of a players own character helping to make the game more personal. even though the story has a set beginning and sometimes a set ending, everything inbetween is controlled by the player through quests they choose to take and friends they make along the way, building their own story as well as the story/universe they are in.

Inter activity
Interactivity stories work by following the events of a set story, usually one chapter at a time and giving the player different choices for almost every option in the game and from multiple perspectives giving the player an incredible amount of branching opportunities that leads to worthwhile re playability.
The stories themselves are usually told through monologue/narration by the characters as they each give their own reasons, responses and personality giving more depth to your actions and decisions within the game which helps portray emotions and view the mental and physical effects on the players character(s) as they are put through the stories trials and ordeals. The player also responds to the story and the character in an emotional way as their actions decide their fate so emotionally feel responsible and so the story leaves a lasting impact even after its finished.

Period
Period games instantly set their story and tell their audience what they should expect through background information including when the game is set, be it future space wars or pre modern renaissance. Stories set in the future instantly have the player picture scenes of space battles and interesting looking weapons and games set in the past creates images of sword and shield combat, heros  of combat and ancient alliances and treacheries as well as experiencing different universes and alternate worlds such as dragons and goblins or aliens and interplanetary travel. These stories make the player feel as though they have the balance of the past and the future in their hands as they tell and have the player feel as though they are the only hope to control these key moments in the timeline.

FPS
Shooter game stories are fast and loud with tails of bullets flying over head, disobeying orders or straight up stories of treachery and revenge. In first person stories you get to experience the action first hand through the eyes of someone else and feel the emotions the character may feel and relate with them as the player guided the character and took in everything that they did. A lot of shooters (especially on the FPS side) involve an all out war between east and west with usually a stereotypical communist Russia invading the USA and trying to take over the world a lot of previous FPS were set during world war two such as COD:BRO and Medal of honor and displayed the grittiness and sadness that those soldiers went through. Very early FPS games almost relied on the fact they had no story. Games such as DOOM immediately threw enemies at you with no rhyme or reason apart from the game to tell the player "this is what to expect, get used to it" and these games excelled incredibly showing that FPS stories are to an extent unneeded.

TPS
Third person shooters differ from first person shooters in the sense that you can actually see how your character is responding to the stories current situation, Be the death of a team mate or fighting overwhelming odds the character reacts and indirectly speaks to the player by giving his/her opinion or by interacting with other character/objects, where as in FPS an NPC may die your character doesn't respond with much more then a hand gesture and doesn't give the same impact as seeing your character portray fear or determination or brutal anger and vengeance. in games like gears of war, you are a one man killing machine overcoming ridiculous odds on insane proportions often beginning with his back against the wall and carrying on to turn the tide of a war with the help of his squad. It reinforces the stereotype of a over powered muscle covered super soldier who uses big guns, saving the day and getting the girl. On the other side older TPS such as the Syphon filter series often had the player act stealthy and encouraged cover approaches to missions while still having sections full of fire fights and you often played as multiple characters including females which reduced the large 'damsel in distress' stereotype and even though your team still were important, being a covert game the world/universe they were in gave them little credit, yet the emotional impact the characters show is still powerful just like in gears of war. It shows how the same genre of game can still offer different styles of story, be it the loud tell of a legendary hero, or the covered up conspiracy of an agent who never was.

Short story

The plane touched down violently, with all wheels screeching and howling against the black, hard tarmac that paved the runway. Me and my friend Charlie had made it, we're here Tokyo Japan. "I'm never flying again, ever" I said to him, my heart still racing frantically. But I looked out through the clean glass window and onto the city and the deep blue mist of a sky that surrounded it.
As we gathered our luggage, we were quickly met by the tutors who had arranged our visit. They were both relatively short, plump women who like us did not at least appear native. Both speaking English and without an accent, they hushed us through the terminal and into a black car and we all sat inside with me and Charlie facing our corresponding teacher.

Now the same passage without adverbs and adjectives

Narrative
The door of the rundown slum apartment was brutally kicked down "Freeze" Chief Rupert yelled
at the masked figure hovering over a laptop linked into a small scaled terminal. The figure stood straight and turned to face the Chief. "Pearce !" exclaimed the chief.
"I'm...impressed, I anticipated I had another day at least before you tracked me here. I underestimated your abilities... and for that I'm sorry" stated Pearce with an unusually calm tone, even though the chief had his .38 Revolver was aimed directly at his chest.
"Turn around real slowly, any sudden move and I'll put a bullet in you." To his frustration 'The Mask' began applauding him with his hands next to his head. "sarcasm wont get you anywhere you lil' punk"
"You misunderstand I am genuinely intrigued by your skill Chief Rupert" the Chief snarled "Yes I know all about you and everything everyone else knows about you"
"What are y'er talkin' about ?"
"The world is built on secrets...you think even your closets assists  your allies your friends! dont keep secrets from you? humans are built to deceive and have became really good at it, take me for example"
"I dont have time for your metaphorical bull shit" shouted the chief as he pulled the hammer back on his gun "Now turn around and put your hands on your head" Pearce started laughing again
"Do you really wanna take me in now ? dont you wanna know all the dirty secrets and plans that are put in place for you ?" said Pearce calmly, raising his hands and putting them on his head "for your wife...?" the chief frowned again "Your daughters ?" The chief looked down and to the side in contemplation, then stood straight out of his shooting position.
"You really think you can bring them down, the united governments ? You're literally taking on the world" Pearce gave a quick shrug and a grunting laugh to himself.
"One man can't bring down the world...but an idea can....thats all I offer, an idea" The chief pushed the hammer on his gun forward and then lowered it.
"Then go" he said flicking his wrist at the window fire escape. Pearce gathered his laptop and stuffed it in his rucksack and tearing of his mask, however the hair and shadows made it unrecognisable as he leaned out the window and tilted his head towards Rupert.
"Just remember chief, im the good guy... and you may wanna leave soon, the terminal is rigged to blow when my laptop is removed" as he jumped and disappeared into the city streets. Rupert's eyes went wide as he left the room and dived down the hall, just missing the explosion. He sat up; put his back against the wall; pulled out a picture of his family from his wallet and his badged and balanced them in each hand.

The Mask
 Intro
The year is 2025, after five years of various conflicts and battles around the world; the four strongest nations pulled together to unite under one flag and settle the first global government. This unlikely alliance between: England, America, China and Russia formed a global unison under the belief of the idea of equality. This idea was evidently foiled from the start. Even though much work was done to repair and rebuild after the wars, only those of high standard, influence and wealth were planned to be saved, where as everyone else had to fight for their survival in the ruins and devastation and were viewed upon as the scum of the universe. In time, specifically five years later the ‘slums’ were rebuilt and things appeared restored. But memories are harder to cover up and the government has failed the people for the last time and plans have been put in place to overthrow them. Chief Broderick is a 43-year-old American man. He has two daughters, beautiful wife, and hard working community man. He is also the Chief of police at the Las Angles police department and holds the word of the law very strongly to his heart and is loyal to it, unto death.

Act 1
The Chief entered the briefing room, coffee in hand with a direct and frustrated face he wore a thousand times when entering the room. He walked behind the front desk he had his regular wrinkled frown on his face, even his moustache looked as though it was annoyed. He placed his coffee on the desk and stood in front of the task board. The team silenced out of respect and looked to the chief for instructions and orders. The chief looked back at them frowning and his eyes quickly glancing and observing one side of the team to the other, each face imprinted in his memory involving one near death situation or another. “Men” the chief said in a sharp, quick, deep voice. “I’m not going to lie… this month has been bloody quiet” he said turning a smile the team shared in. “What? Only… three murders a burglary and a car theft in the entire jurisdiction? I think that’s an all-time record for the L.A. PD in total.” His smile grew “and that’s just how I want to keep it.” He said slamming his hands on the desk. “Right, pleasantries over… what do we have on the stabbing on May 24th?” The meeting continued, links were drawn out, suspicions were made about so and sos brother in law for various reasons until the briefing ended and the officers and detectives went of to do their investigations and patrols and the chief picked up and sipped his coffee and proceeded to his private office. A man dressed in a black shirt and a long black trench coat smiled as he peered through the security footage of the camera he hacked before he stood up from his hunched over position and slowly lowered his mask down his face.

Act 2
The chief progressed down the hall to his office and pushed open the large polished oak doors and sat behind his desk. He placed his coffee down and with a twitch of his moustache began looking over his notes and files. The sun simmered in from the window next to him as he skimmed his notes making adjustments and alterations along the way, only stopping now and again to take an occasional sip of his coffee. All of a sudden a huge explosion was heard just outside his room and smoke started to seep through the door. The Chief immediately looked up, dropped his papers and grabbed his .38 revolver from his desk drawer and ran over to the entrance. The door flung open and the chief was ready to pull the trigger but stopped at the last second as he realized it was one of his colleagues. He was clutching a wound, gun in hand ”C-Chief…” he said
“What the hell is going on out there?” exclaimed the chief. The wounded officer slumped down against the wall.
“S-some kind of…” The officer coughed up some blood “Terrorist attack…”
The chief’s eyes widened. “What the hell?” he said slowly. Another explosion raged out. “I’ve gotta go check it out… hang in there, I’ll send for help.” The chief left the office with his gun aimed straight out. There was debris and rubble everywhere with a few small dwindling fires. The chief eyes fell to the ground and the destruction and through the small layer of smoke were still, motionless bodies of the chief’s team. He looked down at them, taking a moment to sigh sadly. Gunshots were blaring down the halls and the chief followed to investigate. The chief turned the hall to see a group of officers engaged in a gunfight by heavily armed attackers. He immediately ran over to where the officers were held up and fired a couple of shots. “What’s the situation?” The chief yelled. Police captain Clifford let off a few shots then yelled back ant the chief” I have no idea who these guys are or what they’re looking for all I know is there are a lot of theses bastards. We got word they’re focusing their attack on the armory and the archives”
“Ohhhh Shit.” The chief cursed.  “I’m gunna head of them off at the archives, have the men hold here or retreat to the garage… how long ‘til support arrives?”
“We’ve sent out a national SOS soon every soldier in the country will be here. “
“That may take to long” said the chief concerned “Cover me” he Yelled and a barrage of bullets were fired to give the chief time to run for the next corridor. The chief quickly reloaded his weapon and practically threw himself down the stairs into the basement vaults and archives. Upon his arrival the door was blasted from its hinges and the officer on duty at the time was unconscious. After putting the officer in a safe place he braced himself and entered the dark archives.

Act 3
The chief breached the vault and began scanning everywhere as quickly and as securely as possible but the vaults were quiet all apart from the end vault that held the police database. The Chief moved with his weapon drawn and ready trying to peer through the door the closer he moved to it. The chief could hear furious typing on a keyboard and as he edges his way to the door he peered in from the side. He was in shock to see two well-armed thugs guarding a third masked criminal who was typing away enthusiastically on a laptop that was wired into the police mainframe terminal. Without hesitation he charged in and shot several times at the guards to cover himself. One dropped instantly from the shots, the other was only injured and began spraying the chief’s position with automatic fire. The masked hacker was shouting orders to the remaining guard as he worked even faster to get his job done. The fire ceased as the gunman stopped to reload and in that time the chief emerged and knocked the thugs weapon to the ground and then proceeded to do the same to him. With his last guard lying incapacitated, the hacker stopped as the chief raised his gun in one hand and aimed it at him. “Its over, hands behind your head” the criminal smiled and although the chief couldn’t see it, he felt it… it was the smile of a winner. The hacker slammed his hand on the keyboard and hit enter. “Stop…” yelled the chief, but the hacker’s virus was already sent, the chief let out a grunt and moved towards the hacker, “What have you done?”
“Right now, that virus is scanning all your files and transmitting them to my personal server at home… so you gotta choice, arrest me, or stop what I’ve done”
“How do I stop it, Tell me” Yelled the chief.
“You could always shut down the archive mainframe… that would stop the virus…oh but wait, it would also shut down all your governmental information…ah well”
“You bastard” snarled the chief. The masked hacker flung his arms open, time to choose chief, your pride or your information?”
The chief grunted again and ran over to the operations station, in that time the mask had already made it out the door, laptop in hand, wearing his winners smile all the way. The chief began shut down procedures as red lights and alarms flashed overhead and throughout the precinct as he worked frantically going through several “Are you sure?” windows and pushing various buttons the chief flipped the final leaver and the mainframe went quiet and dead. The police central archives were now essentially dead.
