Unit 72 Drawing Concept Art for Computer Games

"What is the purpose of concept art for games?"

Art requires much practice and thought before a final design output can be created. Many variants, scraped ideas and and even full re-design is required before an artist can be happy with his work and is able to Display/present it to business partners or the public. This is even more true in concept art for video games, where the artist is required to produce artworks that not only they are pleased with but, the development team or the modelling team are happy to develop and create as well. it's only when all these elements are completed and approved  that final 2D or 3D rendered characters can be created and the artists work is complete. The purpose for concept art in video games is this initial build up of several ideas and re designs to create a final concept that the development team can take to the next stage.

Of course concept art is not only a 21st century practice, many artists, architects and designers have relied upon concept art as an initial idea and a reference for future development. Be it Nicola Tesla and his design sketches/blueprints to Leonardo and his artworks and designs for paintings and sculptures. From these artist/designers, modern day artists have been able and study their works for better understanding into depth, perspective, detail e.t.c in portraits and landscapes and this of course is then carried on over in gaming concept art for characters and enviroments

Drawing anatomy/skeleton bodies in motion

Bellow are many concept and anatomy drawings

These drawings show movement in the human form from basic skeleton/stick man drawings i made while at the dance studio and while making poses in class. I feel it worked well  removing all the fleshy details allows you to see how the skeleton is built and where the motion is flowing which i found really rewarding/effective.

these are some drawings where life is given to inanimate objects in a animated and lifey style that represents the personalities of the objects e.g a light bulb having a constant headache, some
similarities to this can be found in the T.V show ooglies

These are some basic face sketches drawn in different techniques and different positions e.g. profile this helped me practise drawing in different styles which opened up different ideas for drawing faces completely which helped me in future development

these are some one and two point perspective drawings that I practiced with and believe I got better as time went on as it was difficult in some respects but rewarding in others as it aloud me to draw more accurately

the following are object/still life drawings that helped practise drawing shapes, scale and positioning

Frank Quitely

Frank Quitely was born 1968, better known by the pen name, his real name us Vincent Deighan and he works as a Scottish comic book artist. He is best known for his frequent collaborations with Grant Morrison on titles such as New X-MenWe 3All-Star Superman, and Batman and Robin, as well as his work with Mark Millar on The Authority and Jupiter's Legacy.

Quitely first worked upon the Scottish underground comics title Electric Soup in 1990. He wrote and drew The Greens, a parody of The Broons strip published by D.C. Thompson. It was in working on this book that he adopted his pen name Frank Quitely from the term "quite frankly", as he did not want his family to know it was his work, worried that they may have found it upsetting.

Concept Drawings/Art/Sketches

the following are a variety of concept drawings and artworks I created showing characters and locations  for my game idea.

This is my final design poster that portrays a war between two armies and a lone agent standing in the middle. The story behind the imagery is that the masked fighters are a rebellion that do not agree with force evolution pushed into the human bodys and is now mandatory and compulsory for the entire human race and fight for the right to retain their humanity.
