Introduction:
For unit 34 (Digital manipulation) we were
tasked with creating two collages from a topic of our choice. For my collages the topic I chose to explore and base it around was flooding. I chose this topic as I was inspired by the recent flooding during the winter time between 2013/14 and thought about both the mental as well as physical damage the flood can cause. The message Behind my collage is to show that a flood could strike anywhere and how much damage in can do internally and all the things a person may feel in response to a large extent of devastation.
To take pictures for my collage I used a combination of pictures taken from my camera and taking pictures on my phone and uploaded all my photos to blogger. I also brought in a large amount of 3D objects to scan in, modified and saved for future use. I used a variety of techniques and skills like Photo blending, drawing and scanning. I feel that they worked really well and i enjoyed working with a large array of different materials and finding decent pictures to take and save to be modified, blended and feel the merge of images worked well together. For my collage I needed images such as water textures, a powerful focal point (something to stand out of the water) and images to show flooding. I also needed a large array of images to represent emotions and feelings for my second collage like love, fear, pain e.t.c
I researched into other collages similar to my flooding looking extensively at focal points and colour schemes and how they effect the collage, I also created several mood boards that displayed similar images about floods and emotions, these came from other collages, film and television. This research helped develop my own ideas and was something that not only inspired me but i could refer back to for ideas. I also created various sketches of other initial ideas. These images featured things like an underwater atlantis but I felt this would be to much to do and be overwhelming to the viewer and a wave forming out the back of a persons head but felt like convoy the message to well. In the end I went with the sketches I felt were most powerful and developed them into my final collages. I made various changes to my first collage starting by adding a poster edge filter to everything in the collage (e.g. the Water, church.) to make the collage stand out and give it depth as everything looked too 2D. I also experimented with textures to modify the water and the sky, I also took other images of the sky I collected and cut out the clouds and merged them together and put them into my collage to give my skies more detail and to make it look more 3D. My second collages was too overwhelming do i had to tone it down by removing certain aspects for example my tears and I also remove some textures. However, I did keep the textures where I felt they were most effective like the body and the sky where it made it stand out and gave it better colour I also finally added some fire in my unzipped chest which represents the anger trapped inside.
