"What is the purpose of concept art for games?"
Art requires much practice and thought before a final design output can be created. Many variants, scraped ideas and and even full re-design is required before an artist can be happy with his work and is able to Display/present it to business partners or the public. This is even more true in concept art for video games, where the artist is required to produce artworks that not only they are pleased with but, the development team or the modelling team are happy to develop and create as well. it's only when all these elements are completed and approved that final 2D or 3D rendered characters can be created and the artists work is complete. The purpose for concept art in video games is this initial build up of several ideas and re designs to create a final concept that the development team can take to the next stage.
Of course concept art is not only a 21st century practice, many artists, architects and designers have relied upon concept art as an initial idea and a reference for future development. Be it Nicola Tesla and his design sketches/blueprints to Leonardo and his artworks and designs for paintings and sculptures. From these artist/designers, modern day artists have been able and study their works for better understanding into depth, perspective, detail e.t.c in portraits and landscapes and this of course is then carried on over in gaming concept art for characters and enviroments
